Explanation: How to Earn Hilton Honors Points for Stays

The Hilton Honors program may seem overly complicated when it comes to earning points for stays. This post will help you in demystifying the complications and provide a clear explanation of how you can earn “base points,” and all the different ways you can earn bonus points, for your upcoming stay at one of Hilton’s 14 different hotel brands.

Detailed Breakdown: How to Earn Hilton Honors Points During for Stays

Base Points: This is the foundation of the Hilton Honors program. Provided you are paying for your stay with money or with a combination of “Points & Money,” and that you booked directly through Hilton (or a traditional travel agent), you will earn base points for your stay.

You earn 10 base points for every dollar spent on eligible folio charges at the following 10 brands: Canopy, Conrad, Curio Collection, DoubleTree, Embassy Suites, Hilton, Hilton Garden Inn, Hilton Grand Vacations, Tapestry Collection, and Waldorf Astoria. Eligible folio charges include your room rate, including any mandatory resort fee, plus just about anything you can charge to your room folio, such as meals in the hotel restaurant, valet parking, or dry cleaning. Taxes on your room rate are not considered eligible folio charges.

You earn 10 base points for every dollar spent on the room rate, and only the room rate, at the following two brands: Hampton and Homewood Suites. Anything other than the room rate will not earn you base points at these two brands.

You earn 5 base points for every dollar spent on the room rate, and only the room rate, at the following two brands: Home2 Suites and Tru.

For example, if you stay one night at a DoubleTree with a room rate of $150, taxes totaling $20, and charge a $35 dinner (including tax and gratuity) in the hotel restaurant to your room, you would earn (150 + 35) * 10 = 1,850 base points for your stay. If you stay one night at a Hampton Inn with a room rate of $95, taxes totaling $10, and charge a $15 parking fee to your room, you would earn 95 * 10 = 950 base points for your stay. If you stay one night at a Tru with a room rate of $80, taxes totaling $7, and charge $5 in snack items to your room, you would earn 80 * 5 = 400 base points for your stay.

“Points & Points” or “Points & Miles” Bonus: You can elect to earn bonus Honors points or miles with Hilton’s 66 travel partners for any of your stays for which you earn base points. You can change your “Double Dip” earning style in your Hilton Honors account profile anytime before a stay, but can only select one of the two bonuses for any given stay.

If you elect to earn points, you will earn an additional 5 bonus Honors points for every dollar spent on eligible folio charges at the following 10 brands: Canopy, Conrad, Curio Collection, DoubleTree, Embassy Suites, Hilton, Hilton Garden Inn, Hilton Grand Vacations, Tapestry Collection, and Waldorf Astoria.

You will earn an additional 5 bonus points for every dollar spent on the room rate, and only the room rate, at the following two brands: Hampton and Homewood Suites. Anything other than the room rate will not earn you base points at these two brands. You earn 2.5 bonus points for every dollar spent on the room rate, and only the room rate, at the following two brands: Home2 Suites and Tru.

If you elect to earn miles, you will generally earn one mile per dollar spent, although maximum caps may apply, especially for stays at a Home2 Suites.
