What Are Alaska Mileage Plan Miles Worth? January 2017

Real World Machine values Alaska Mileage Plan miles at 1.4 cents (USD) each. By our calculations, this makes Mileage Plan miles more valuable than Delta, United, or JetBlue miles, but less valuable than American, Southwest, or Virgin America miles.

Measured as a reward miles rebate for non-elite members, the Mileage Plan program rebates you 4.6%, in the form of miles, for your spending on airfare, exclusive of taxes and most fees, with Alaska Airlines. Those at the top elite status level, which is MVP Gold 75K, get a 10.4% miles rebate.

How Did We Calculate the Value?

The value of one point is determined primarily by the award mileage cost to redeem AAdvantage miles towards flights. Award flight redemption costs are are based on 20 air routes…10 domestic and 10 international. For consistency, the same air routes are used to compare multiple airlines.

The valuation also factors in the variety of redemption options, the size of the Alaska’s network, and the availability of awards.

Alaska performs alright on these metrics. Without their 15+ partner airlines, their network is essentially limited to the West Coast and major U.S. cities. As a largely domestic carrier, they only offer first and economy classes of service (no business class). Award availability on Alaska flights is good.

Fortunately, Alaska also works with 15+ partner airlines, including heavy hitters like American, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Emirates, Air France, and KLM. This gives Alaska Mileage Plan members the opportunity to redeem their miles with partner airlines in first, business, premium economy, and economy class. Between all of its partners, this leads to a very extensive global network and multiple opportunities to find award availability.
